If you’re considering acupuncture but worried about pain, you’re not alone.

Unfortunately, the fear of needles keeps many people from experiencing the benefits of this ancient healing practice. I want to address your concerns directly and you exactly what acupuncture feels like.

As an acupuncturist in Ottawa, I hear this question almost daily: “Does acupuncture hurt?”

The short answer is no – most patients are surprised by how comfortable the treatment actually is. In fact, many of my patients fall asleep during their sessions!

Let me show you what to expect during your acupuncture treatment.

Acupuncture Needles: Not What You’d Expect!

The biggest misconception about acupuncture is around what the needles themselves look like. When most people think “needle,” they picture the thick, hollow needles used for injections or blood draws.

But acupuncture needles are completely different. I wonder if we should even call them needles!

Called “pins” by some practitioners, acupuncture needles have a unique design that make them barely noticeable when being inserted.

So, What Do They Actually Look Like?

Acupuncture needles are incredibly thin — over 70% thinner than conventional medical needles.

They’re also solid, not hollow like injection needles, because they’re designed to gently separate body tissue rather than cut through it.

This is why the insertion also feels so different from what you might expect.

Watch A Real Acupuncture Session (Not As Scary As You Think)

Seeing is believing, which is why I sometimes encourage people to watch actual acupuncture treatments in progress. In our clinic videos, you can see real patients receiving treatment – and more importantly, you can see zero discomfort when needles are put in.

It’s that simple – we just insert the needles to a level where you’re comfortable, there is no pain. Many patients have a nap during their entire treatment because they’re so relaxed.

What You’ll Actually Feel During Treatment

When a needle is put in, you might feel a brief, mild sensation. Most patients describe it as:

  • Less noticeable than a mosquito bite
  • A light pinch that quickly fades
  • Sometimes a slight tingling or warmth
  • Occasionally a dull ache (this is actually good!)

Some patients experience what we call “de qi” – a slight tingling, warmth, or dull ache. I sometimes say it’s a little spicy, and at its most intense it’s like a mini electric jolt.

This indicates the acupuncture point has been properly stimulated. This sensation is actually a good sign that your body is responding to the treatment.

Many patients are amazed by how quickly any initial sensation fades. Once a needle is in and most people forget it’s even there.

Where Are Needles Placed and How Deep Do They Go?

The specific acupuncture points we choose depend on your individual health concerns.

Whether you’re seeking help with headaches and migraines, lower back pain, fertility or hormonal support, stress relief, or other health concerns, points chosen are often at the extremity of the body, but the treatment differed from patient to patient and so a plan will be discussed with you before your treatment.

Just because you have pain in a specific area does not mean that is where we will treat. Oftentimes we avoid very painful areas as that will only aggravate the area further. Luckily there are many different approaches we can take making the treatment even more comfortable for YOU, the patient.

Needle depth depends on the area we are treating, with points on the hands/feet, wrists/ankles relatively superficial while we might go deeper in larger muscles. It all depends on what we are treating, all while taking your comfort level into consideration.

Why Acupuncture Points on the Arms, Hands, Legs, and Feet Are So Effective

I typically like to stimulate the nerves that are on arms, hands, legs and feet because those are really the best acupuncture points.

Your extremities contain some of the most powerful acupuncture points for treating a wide range of conditions.

These points happen to be where you have clusters of nerve endings, and by stimulating these nerves we can then increase more blood flow to promote healing.

Lying Down or Sitting Up? What to Expect During Acupuncture Treatment

One of the great things about acupuncture is its flexibility. You can do your session by yourself or as a group (community acupuncture), sitting in a chair or laying down.

Acupuncture can be in any position, really — especially helpful if you have mobility concerns or a positional preference.

Table (Laying Down) Benefits:

  • Complete relaxation and comfort
  • Access to points on front and back of body
  • Most common treatment position
  • Ideal for longer sessions

Chair (Sitting) Benefits:

  • Perfect for patients who prefer sitting upright
  • Great for those with mobility concerns
  • More comfortable than a massage bed for many patients
  • Excellent for certain treatment approaches
  • Our go-to for women who are expecting and feel more comfortable reclined vs laying down

Both positions are equally effective. Your comfort is always our priority when deciding which approach to use.

What Happens After the Needles Are Put In?

Once the needles are in place, the active part of your treatment is essentially over.

You’ll then get to relax for about 20-40 minutes. Length of needle retention depends on treatment and will be discussed with you. This rest period is crucial for allowing your nervous system to respond to the acupuncture stimulation.

During treatment, the room is kept quiet and comfortable, often with soft lighting to promote relaxation. Some patients enjoy this time for meditation or simply letting their minds wander.

Many patients find this time deeply relaxing – so much so that they fall asleep during treatment. The needles remain in place while you rest and, as I shared earlier, most people forget they’re even there.

When it’s time to remove the needles, the process is even quicker and gentler than insertion. Most patients don’t feel the needles being removed at all.

Gentle Treatment, No Matter Your Concern

Acupuncture can address a remarkable range of health concerns beyond pain management.

At our clinics, we offer specialized treatments including fertility acupuncture for couples trying to conceive, facial rejuvenation acupuncture for natural anti-aging benefits, and targeted treatments for anxiety and stress relief.

Each treatment approach uses the same gentle needling techniques, regardless of the specific health concern being addressed.
