Tips to Staying Healthy over the Holidays

Many of us will be traveling over the Christmas holidays. In the excitement of the holiday season, we sometimes forget that whenever we leave our home environment/climate/weather/routine, we put our health and immune system at risk. This is why so many people tend to get sick on vacation or right after vacation. Here are 5 things you shouldn’t leave home without to remain healthy while enjoying the holiday season!

  • Therapeutica Pillow

    1. Your pillow

I love my pillow and always notice that my sleep isn’t the same without it. As sleep is such a critical factor in keeping your immune system strong – make sure you get quality sleep and bring your pillow along with you. This is the pillow I use. Talk to Dr. Emilie if you have questions about how Therapeutica pillows can help you. –

  • Oil of Oregano

    2. Oil of Oregano

Like it or not – you are going to be exposed to bacteria and viruses. Taking some Oil of Oregano can help deflect those germs that would otherwise give you a cold! Since I’m a Chinese herbalist, I also like to bring in some of my own Chinese herbs. One of my favourite formulas to keep my immune system healthy is simply Gui Zi Tang. Talk to Martin if you would like some Chinese Herbs to keep the winter colds away!

  • Activated Charcol

    3. Activated charcoal

Let’s be honest. You are likely going to indulge and make some not-so-wise holiday food choices and maybe have some rummy eggnog too (wink, wink). You should consider helping your body detoxify after all those indulgences with some activated charcoal. Again this is something that can be prescribed with Chinese medicine, however, you can also buy activated charcoal at your local health food store. I know that Herb and Spice on Bank St. keeps some in stock. Important to note – it is always best to consult a health practitioner, like Martin, before taking a new herb or supplement.

  • Compression Socks

    4. Compression socks

When traveling, there is a good chance you may be be sitting in a car or on a plane for an extended period of time. Give your legs and your circulatory system some support and use a pair compression socks. They sell them at all major sport stores. You can even buy them on Amazon, however I recommend trying a pair on to make sure the fit is right. You want them to fit very tightly!

  • Magnesium Bath Flakes

    5. Magnesium bath flakes

Especially if I’ve been active all day, I love a good soak. Many of you will decide to try new and exciting physical activities while you’re away on holidays. This is awesome but since most of us live a more sedentary lifestyle – your muscles and joints are going to feel it. Magnesium can help with the joint pain and muscle cramping that sometimes comes after an enthusiastic physical adventure! We recommend Ancient Minerals Magnesium Bath Flakes. These bath flakes are similar to Epsom salts but they are much more potent and free from toxins and other impurities. You can get some right in the clinic reception area.
